Owl Mittens

I wanted to make a pair of mittens to match the hat I made my grandniece but that was going nowhere fast. I used a pattern that I'll link to and added a few touches to make it an owl. I tried a handful of patterns but they either didn't look right or the pattern made little sense. So I went back to my standby and I really like this pattern. I used it last year to make mittens for my brothers kid's and they loved them so much.
The pattern is clearly written and the mittens work up pretty fast. It's easy to add rows or stitches to make a larger size for older kids. Here's the link to the actual mitten pattern:  https://thecraftfrog.wordpress.com/2010/12/28/animal-winter-wear/

I followed the pattern through R 10 and on R 11 I started the pink.
For the tufts I used the smallest pom pom maker in my set.
I used an F/3.75mm hook for these

Toddler Sized Owl Keyhole Scarf

This is the final pattern I wrote for the owl set I'm giving my grandniece for her second birthday. I've never tried making one of these before, let alone writing out a pattern for one so my fingers are crossed. I looked at several other scarves as well as Q&A posts about the sizing but my model isn't here today and I have to get it packed and ready for shipping before he'll be back. Meh, still cute and if it's too big she can grow into it.

Toddler sized owl hat

This is the owl hat that I made for my grandniece's 2nd birthday. Super cute and easy enough to make in a day or two. It's made to fit someone with a 20 inch head so it would work for more than just a toddler, maybe add a few extra rows depending on the person.

My grandniece is turning 2 this week so I was looking around Ravelry and random Google searches trying to decide what to make her. I found a really cute little owl hat and started it right away. When it was done I used my grandnephew as a model to see if it would fit her, he's one month older. I was very disappointed to find that it was nowhere close to big enough.
I'm not one to give up easily once my mind is set on something, which in this case is a good thing. I measured my grandnephew and set out to make an owl hat that would fit. I got a little carried away with how cute it turned out and the hat became part of a matching set.
Hat, check.
Mittens, check.
Scarf, check.
Purse, check.
Plushie, check.
Maybe more than just a little carried away but it was fun and everything came out so cute I couldn't help it. The mittens are the only part that I didn't create the pattern for. It doesn't get cold for long here so by the time I wrote up a pattern that worked and I liked it would be warm again.
So here's what the entire set looks like. Patterns will follow.

Flower Tawashi Pattern

Back again with another free pattern. I've started working on gifts and gift sets to sell for the holidays since that time is rapidly approaching. There are a lot of tawashi patterns out there so I decided to try making my own addition. This is the finished product and untested pattern for it.

     Flower Tawashi

Hook         H/5mm & N/10mm
Acrylic yarn    Flower color(FC) white, Contrast color 1(CC1) yellow,
        Contrast color 2(CC2) green
Tulle  (do not use tulle with glitter. The glitter will come out and scratch
whatever you're washing and you'll end up looking like a unicorn
    threw up on you)
Yarn/Tapestry needle
Scissors

Gauge isn't important as long as the top and bottom are the same size. The
tulle center should be slightly smaller to fit inside.
You can make this out of cotton instead of acrylic yarn.

Terms
SC    Single crochet
DC    Double crochet
Sl st    Slip stitch
Ch    Chain

Special Stitch
For the popcorn stitch you work your 4 DC as usual. After you finish the 4th
stitch you turn the work and slip stitch into the top of the 1st stitch. If you haven't
done this stitch before I recommend finding a tutorial on Youtube.

Lalaloopsy Littles Doll Crochet Pattern

I have a grandniece and grandnephew who are both around 1 1/2 and they love playing with my daughter's Lalaloopsy dolls. My grandnephew has recently learned how to throw, great for playing ball but not so much with everything else. Since I had just finished making several dresses and outfits for Lalaloopsy dolls I decided to give making the Littles dolls as well. This is the finished design and the kiddos loved their new babies.

 Hk size~ F/3.75
Worsted weight(4) yarn in cream and white for doll
Super Bulky(6) yarn in your choice of color for hair
2  3/4in buttons for eyes
Black felt for lashes on girl doll
Pink felt for cheeks
Crochet Thread for mouth
Embroidery thread to sew on lashes and cheeks
Scissors
Tapestry, Yarn, and Embroidery needles
Fiberfill
*Optional*
Lint roller. When making and attaching the hair I got covered in fuzz.
Safety Pin for the diaper. If it's for a small child then try using a decorative button that only looks like a safety pin. Locking stitch markers or party favors, if none of those you can try silver/gray embroidery floss and hand stitching one on.
Bit of red felt for a small heart on the back of the diaper. The dolls have their 'sewn to life' date on them.

    Other options
Bulky(5) yarn for hair. You can go smaller, it just takes longer to attach.
Substitute Cream yarn for any color you want your doll. She's your doll, or gift, so have fun with it!
Embroidery floss for mouth
Scraps of fleece for lashes & cheeks
Eyes don't have to be the same color. One or both eyes can be closed for a wink or sleeping baby. You can make an eye patch for a pirate or X for zombie.
Crochet a small circle for cheeks
Fabric scrap filled with Poly Pellets in bottom to help the doll sit nicely
Magic Circle instead of ch 2
Skip the sl st, ch 1 thoughout pattern if you don't want a 'seam'. That's just my preference when making amigurumi
Instead of sewing a smile on you can use decorative buttons, like a kiss or even a moustache.
Add bows or flowers to her hair ties for that special finishing touch.

Notes: You can make this for yourself or as a gift. You are more than welcome to sell the finished product, just give me credit for the pattern. Do not repost this pattern and claim it as your own, that's just plain rude. If you alter the pattern please send me a picture and directions so others can give it a try, I will give you the credit for your work.
The most important part of making this doll is having fun with it! Make your baby as unique as you, or the person the baby is for, are.

Leave a long tail for sewing

For the hair I cut 36 pieces of yarn 14 inch long. Using an I/5.25mm hook to chain along the center of the yarn, 2 strands at a time, leaving a long tail on both the beginning and end of the chain. I stitched the hair to the head along the chain, making sure to catch each strand. The 'part' isn't exactly straight but if you've ever tried putting pigtails on a toddler you know that's normal.
I cut another strand of 14 inch yarn for each pigtail, wrapping it around several times. You don't need to wrap this tightly, it will bunch up. Run the embroidery floss through the wrapped part, catching all the hair and securing it from pulling free. Now sew the pigtail to the head so it doesn't flop out of place, she'll look silly if you don't. All that's left now is to trim the ends and tidy it up.
If you want your doll to have longer hair you can leave it as it is or even cut your strands longer than 14 inches. Or you can use whatever method you like to make and attach her hair.

    Assembly
Stitch hair, eyes, lashes, and cheeks to head.
(To make the cheeks I traced around a button.)
Stitch on a mouth. (It doesn't have to be a smile.)
Sew the body to the head.
Sew the tops of the arms and legs closed, then sew them on the body.
(I pinned the pieces on to decide where I wanted them before sewing.)
If you're giving the doll a safety pin or heart on the bottom, now's the time to add those.

These are pics I took as I worked on the hair. I'm still not overly satisfied with the results so it's a work in progress.

First is the hair for the girl doll.
This is the hair after crocheting it into a chain.
Below is the hair after it's been sewn on along the chain.
Below is the hair after it's been wrapped. I went with short hair for this doll.

Now for the baby boy.
I used the same method to make and attach the hair as I used for the girl.
I used pins to mark where I wanted to sew the hair to the side.
I flipped the chain down for the boy. The 'bump' looked less like a braid according to my daughter. I used 'parted' the hair to the side instead of down the center.
I staggered the length of the hair so it A, left fewer 'bald' spots, and B, there was too much to work it all the same length. I worked the front down the side and the back to fill in.
I used craft glue on the ends of the hair to keep it from fraying or coming loose of the stitching. It didn't come out as stiff as I was afraid it would so that was a bonus. This was a lot of work and took almost a full day to stitch in place and wait for glue to dry so I could continue.

Sew back of dress from bottom using mattress stitch. Leave top 2 inches open, attach button and loop at top.

The shoes are not my design, they just went with the dress. I made these 10 rows and left off the laces so they'd look like boots instead of sneakers. You can find the free pattern here:  http://rapunzelmodernday.blogspot.com.au/2013/05/crochet-lalaloopsy-shoes.html

A bit about me

Hmm, where to start? I'm a mom of four, three of them grown, and a widow. I've done a little of this and that for crafting over the years. These days I focus more on crochet, especially amigurumi. I love cute little plushies and have a lot of fun making them. I've recently taken up knitting and still consider myself a complete novice.
I sew but not as much as when my kids were younger. It was easy when I could pick up a pattern and make them a dozen pairs of shorts for the summer but these days it's all about cosplay with them. I've done some counted cross stitch, floral wreaths and crowns, and attempted using clay but that was a disaster.
I've been thinking about making a blog for my crochet stuff for a while and decided it was finally time to sit down to do it. To start I'll be posting my own patterns that I'm sharing for free. These will be things that I don't plan to make and sell on etsy or things I deem too cute to not share.

A quick list of my favorite things

Color:        Purple
Animal:      Rabbit or Dragon
Number:    86 (yes, I have a favorite number)
Drink:        Coffee, I'm addicted to the stuff
Food:        I don't think I have a favorite food
Style:         Creepy cute things are love
Movie:       Changes constantly
TV show:   Elementary, NCIS all 3, Doctor Who, Aibou
Anime:       Tokyo Ghoul, Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan, Sword Art Online
Music:        Japanese rock
Band:          Top 5 are, the GazettE, Dir en Grey, X Japan, Mejibray, Smileberry
